Many of you miss the point about the complainers. We’re mad not because the new interface sucks and the developers don’t care, but because it sucks and it has killed off the one good player we did have. All development on 1.4 has halted, for obvious reasons. As everything moves to KDE4, it gets harder and harder to keep 1.4 working, unless you want to stay with KDE3, which will also continue to get harder.

There is no other player currently written for KDE that has the same feature set. Even the GTK rewrite (Exaile) lacks a lot of the things that 1.4 had.

Amarok 2 is bad in every possible way. They have done nothing right with it. Some of the things are very simple fixes, like changing the coloring of the play list. As it stands, there is very little contrast and it’s confusing to look at. Everything is gray and embossed when it doesn’t need to be. The playlist entries flow together and into the rest of the panel. It sucks.

What about dragging the album cover in the playlist and getting the album tracks in the playlist? I miss that option from the old amarok…

Yes Tom, you’re right – now I’ve started using other players a lot more, and I miss Amarok 1.4. It seems the features I used most in 1.4 are missing – not to mention the basic layout not being improved (exept that the ‘now playing’ track info is centered rather than selectable on the ‘collection/internet/playlists’ tab.

I think that Amarok is for people who prefer g wobbly buttons that look like plastic balloons, rather than people who want to easily right click the playing track and get musicbrainz to fill in the tags for them, or tell Amarok to organise it – as with 1.4.

So yes, I’ll be keeping an eye on the other players I have installed, and the choice seems much more open to me now that Amarok is taking this new unpopular path.

Almost, but not quite. Let’s say you have an artist you have 4 albums with. The same artist is also a part of 4 compilations.

If you were to believe the albums applet, the artist would have made 8 of your albums.

1.4 was more to my liking here, since it divided up the list in

“Albums with only this artist”
“Compilations with this artist” (paraphrasing)

That’s something I’d like to return. And if you play a track of that artist, and click on a compilation in the album-widget it would expand to only show the songs from that artist instead of all songs.

Hello,

Nice to see how amarok progress!

If I had a wish (different from the above that I support like making a compact view), it would be to have an interface without all those configuration buttons (like under the playlist=>put them in the “playlist” menu or like filters’ options that can go in a “display” tab in config dialog).

The purpose of amarok is to browse and manage a collection+playlist and to play music, not to configure the interface (user do that once, and then usually use the same settings).

Those sidebar buttons, while I don’t hate them, need a lot of work.

They don’t match current themes, and different text sizes causes them to be off-center (at least in 2.0.x). You don’t need to get rid of them, but their current implementation needs polish. They don’t feel or act like native UI widgets at all.

Amarok’s custom widget style runs the risk of looking out of place in anything BUT an Oxygen-themed environment, and even then it looks a little “not quite right.”

I also don’t mind the large progress bar — it’s good to have room to click — but could something else be put up there too? The progress bar is okay, but all that wasted space for just one bar (the Volume bar can’t fill up that area all on its own) is kinda strange.

great, that’s finally good.
i’d like to have that for the collection browser also, having 150-200gb of mp3 files is not a good thing to put on a tree, more to expand to the leaves every time i need to select single tracks…

Would it be possible to get the Amarok v1.4 left column back as well?

I really love it how it shows the cover of the album containing the currently played track and all the other works from the same artist – e.g. I use it all the time in a “Oh, that one is pretty nice. What was the other great song he did? Oh, there it is!” style and really miss that in v2.

If you do that as a sidebar (exactly like in v1.4) it shouldn’t harm anyone not liking it but would give us the option to have it.

Maybe he’s using it because Amarok 1.4 was such a good *KDE* music player. I’m still using KDE3 but have tried KDE4 on several occasions and I really hated the new Amarok. I would very much like to see it come back to its old style. I don’t really care what is the artist’s biography or other metadata. I need something to quickly search my collection and manage playlists. Functionality-wise Foobar comes to mind. On rare occasions though I’m used to look up stuff like lyrics and this is a GREAT functionality. I think users have every right to complain. Of course developers have every right to ignore the complaints but then they shouldn’t be surprised when the users start leaving. One more thing … mankind wouldn’t progress much without complaints.

Luis, you’re going to be accused of complaining… Anyway, I agree with most of the points you raise – mostly because on a small (netbook) screen, all the items you speak of are important. Amarok 2.x is mostly cumbersome because of all the wasted space, while 1.4 had a much more compact interface.
But with these changes, and the collection scanning nearly fixed, it is now much closer to being usable again.

It’s great that you started offering the old Playlist style again, however, Amarok has a flawed GUI regardless of how customizable the playlist is (I actually use the svn version):

1.- Those big buttons are the biggest non-sense ever.
2.- Lets waste space by using an enormous progress bar, and know, volume bar.
3.- The Plasma context view, I’m not a fan myself, however, it does make some good things, yet, it wastes too much space, specially the new design for showing the current track info.
4.- The sidebar tabs were bad back on 1.4, and they still are.
5.- Still no option to hide the context view? Thanks god there’s bespin.

However, Amarok is in fact improving, and I the developers deserve cheers for such a highly customizable playlist.

Awesome! This is great to see. I really like the middle column, but for e.g. parties it is a nice feature to be able to hide it.

Quite frustrating (even as a user and mere reader of the planet) how people keep complaining an demanding, even as you post about the implementation of something they wished for.

pretty please try to fix ‘em includes for the newer gcc versions for the 2.1 as both gcc-4.4 and especially gcc-4.5 simply can’t understand all those obsoleted C-style includes, all the modern kids do ‘em C++-style… you know, instead of the ancient for the C classes… fopen and friends.
